Griffin Marine Services are a recognised British Sub Aqua Club Seamanship Centre. The Solent is a superb place to undertake your Diver Powerboat Training.
We offer the following courses to Clubs and Individuals. We are more than happy to arrange Club discounts on all our RYA Powerboat Training and Shore based courses and BSAC Boat Handling and Shore Based courses
We recommend that you have the RYA VHF DSC Operators Certificate as most of the courses involve communication and summoning assistance.
The size of the discount increases with the numbers booking a course.
All courses require a minimum of two to run.
If you book more than Two you qualify for a 10% discount
If you book more than Three you qualify for a 15% discount
If you book more than Four you qualify for a 20% discount

All course materials wet weather gear and safety equipment is provided in the course fee.
We have two 7 metre, Solent Ribs powered by 150HP and 200HP outboard engines that are used for training, both are fitted with VHF DSC and Chart Plotters and Echo Sounders. We teach with a maximum of three students to one Instructor on all our boat handling courses and up to a maximum of 12 on our shorebased courses.
We also have available to us a MCA Cat 4 Dive Charter Rib Fitted with a Yanmar inboard diesel Radar/Chart Plotter, Sonar/Depth Sounder and VHF DSC Radio.
The Diver Boat Handling and Diver Coxswain course are recognised by the Combined Diving Associations they consist of.
CDA BOAT HANDLING TWO DAY COURSE £250
The course covers small planing craft of a length typically between 5 and 8 metres.
We look at types of craft suitable for diving and their engines and drive units, the advantages/disadvantages of Petrol verses Diesel, Inboards verses Outboards, Navigation and Communications Afloat, Safety Equipment to be carried for diving from a boat. We make the course as practical as possible but there will be some theory this will involve rules of the road, Solas V regulations, Buoyage, Bye-Laws, Insurance and Passage Planning, Sources of Weather Information, Tides, Chartwork, preparing the boat and launch and recovery and basic close down procedures of boat, engine and trailer.
CDA DIVER COXSWAIN HALF DAY ASSESSMENT AND ICC £95
This award is open to any BSAC member over the age of 16.Candidates should have either attended a BSAC boat-handling course and have at least 5 hours logged experience from the course completion date. Or have at least 20 hours substantial logged boat handling experience.
The CDA Diver Coxswain Certificate will only be awarded to those who show competence in the handling and management of a small powerboat. The assessment comprises of three sections made up of. Voyage/Passage planning, Practical Boat Handling, and Theory Knowledge. Failure of any part means failure of the whole assessment.
Voyage/Passage Planning.
Complete a voyage/passage plan as given by the Instructor.
Determine High Water and Low Water and whether Springs or Neaps and time of Slack Water for the day.
Demonstrate an understanding of the weather forecast and the terminology used and where this information can be obtained.
Practical Assessment.
Open water handling – high speed correct use of a kill chord at all times and use of power trim and tilt, driving in a head sea, beam sea, and following sea action to be taken in rough weather.
Confined water handling coming alongside leaving alongside, turning the boat in a confined space, use of springs, holding off and ferry glides.
Anchoring depth of water and scope required.
Dropping and recovering a shot line.
Dropping and Recovering Divers
Action to be taken in the event of a Man Overboard
Approaching a shelving shore
Recovery onto a trailer
Oral theory assessment
List the safety equipment to be carried
Emergencies afloat radio operation, Pan Pan, Mayday, Engine Failure, Overdue Divers procedure and emergency signals.
Knots and their uses Bowline, Clove Hitch, Round turn and two Half Hitches, Anchor Bend and Reef Knot
Rules of the Road for IRPCS, Navigation Lights and Day Shapes, Buoyage, Identification of Lateral and Cardinal Buoys and general Buoyage.
CHART WORK AND POSITION FIXING TWO DAY COURSE £245
Pre Course Requirements Diver Boat Handling or Diver Coxswain Certificate or the RYA Powerboat level 2 Certificate.
The aim of the course is to teach students basic techniques of marine navigation, which will help them as active divers in planning and managing dives undertaken by a typical BSAC Branch.
This course comprehensively covers the requirements of Dive Leader lesson LT7 and is a training option for BSAC Advanced Diver.
The course covers The Compass Rose, Position Fixing Bearings, Headings and Distance.
Steering to transits and their uses, GPS and Waypoint Navigation. Tides and Weather, High Speed Navigation and Passage Planning. Day one we learn the techniques required to plan a passage using traditional and electronic means on day two we put this into practice by undertaking the passage around the Solent .
DIVER FIRST AID ONE DAY COURSE £85
The aim of the course is to teach the basics of First Aid likely to be needed in the Sports Diving environment and making use of the resources likely to be available at the time.
The course will cover the principles of First Aid, Casualty Examination, Summoning Assistance, Shock, Wounds and Bleeding, Bandaging and Pressure Points, Burns, Miscellaneous Injuries and Conditions, Injuries to Muscles, Bones and Joints, Dressings, Splinting and Moving Casualties, First Aid Kits BSAC AED COURSE FOR DIVERS £45
The aim of this course is to train Divers and others involved in BSAC Diving activities with little or no knowledge and experience of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) in their use during a Diving emergency with particular attention to precautions required in the Diving environment.
Entry Level
Anyone one with up-to-date skills and knowledge of current Basic Life Support protocols. This can either be BSAC Sports Diver Training or attendance at a BSAC Oxygen Administration Course or other equivalent training.
DIVER O2 ADMINISTRATION ONE DAY COURSE £85
The aim of this course is to teach the administration of oxygen as a means of increasing the effectiveness of First Aid treatment while either on a boat or dry land.
Practical revision of EAV/CPR, use of a Pocket Mask, Oxygen and Diving Incidents: Conditions and symptoms. Oxygen Admin Equipment and Use.
OUTBOARD ENGINE MAINTENANCE ONE DAY COURSE £75
If you would like to become a Diver Boat Handling Instructor or Diver Coxswain Assessor we can organise this for you.
Approved Boat Handling Instructor
The course is held over 3 day’s Day one is all about teaching styles and course delivery ashore and afloat. Day two and three is you assisting the Instructor and getting some real hands on experience of teaching.
Requirements for approval. Current BSAC Member and Open Water Instructor (or hold an acceptable Boat Handling Instructional Qualification issued by another agency i.e. RYA Powerboat Instructor or RLSS UK Trainer Assessor Inshore Rescue Boats.
Hold both the BSAC Boat Handling Course (or RYA Powerboat Level 2) and Diver Coxswain Certificates.
Serve actively and effectively as an Assistant Instructor on a BSAC Boat Handling Course, and thus gain the recommendation of the Chief Instructor.
The cost of the course is £395 but if you bring two paying students with you then the course is £150.
DIVER COXSWAIN ASSESSOR £150
Requirements for approval.
Current BSAC member and Open Water Instructor.
Hold the approved Boat Handling Instructor (BHI) Certificate.
Receive training and induction from a Diver Coxswain Assessor on a Diver Coxswain Assessment.
We recommend that you have either your RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate or the Ability to navigate up to the level of RYA Day Skipper, a short test will be given to those who do not hold either of the above but do have substantial logged Boat Driving hours.
If you bring two paying candidates for the Diver Coxswain Assessment then the course is free.
